Loch Raven Photography

David Simpson is a professional photographer and film director. He traveled all over the country for his work before 9/11. After that, flying no longer was fun. But in the fall of 2007, he was stressed out by his work and bought a fishing kayak. He wanted to get some exercise. He launched the kayak in Loch Raven Reservoir, toting his camera with him. He found out he was not good at exercise. But he was very good at taking photographs of the reservoir. He kept coming back.

The images he captured didn't look like post cards. They weren't documentary. They looked more like paintings. He photographed water, skies, trees and shoreline through spring, summer and fall. He shot from land, but most of the time he shot from the kayak.

Last January, Simpson was on his way home from a meeting. He was as dressed up as he gets these days - shirt, slacks and dress shoes - when he saw the flakes on the windshield. It was the first snow of the season. He pulled over, grabbed the camera off the front seat, and got out of the car. He spent the next hour trudging through mud and snow to capture the reservoir in winter. His collection was complete.

The book is titled "Loch Raven Photography."
